Offering a full product line, from novice to pro is good for the whole line. Why invest in expensive lenses for a camera when you will not be able to upgrade to a better model because there isnt one.
What I like about the Nikon and Cannon line ups is that I can get into either of there systems relatively easily and upgrade cameras along the way - knowing that my lenses will be usable on any of their cameras.
The problem with Pentax at the moment is that they only have one camera model on offer. This is a shame as historically they were very good, and very successfull, with an entire range of bodies, from entry level (K1000) to pro (LX).
