Hi, Bruce,
I've had similar thoughts/concerns as you have WRT
PUG, and have wondered how much PAW has influenced all
of this.
I've wondered if the problems that we've been having
with Komkom have contributed somewhat, as well. I
think someone pointed out that I was incorrect, but I
still get the feeling that since Adelheid, with all
her noble efforts, is posting PUG on her own site,
then posting the URL on this list, that we're the only
ones looking at PUG. I felt (maybe inaccurately) that
in the past PUG had an audience much larger than the
list.
But, beyond that, there hardly seems to be the monthly
buzz for PUG that there used to be. One could count
on several days of
comments/critiques/favourites/whatever at the
beginning of each month. That seems to be missing
these days.
If PAW is somewhat responsible for this, I think it's
the immediacy of the beast. You look at (or don't)
one photo, comment on one photo. It's quick, it's
easy, it's fun from both a viewer's and contributor's
POV. What I like about it as a photo poster is that
I'm virtually guaranteed feedback of some sort. That
often doesn't happen (at least for me) on PUG. It's
actually a rare month that I get comments, except from
those intrepid souls who comment on all of them.
As you no doubt recall, we've tried to organize PUG
comment groups or circles or whatever in the past -
most recently by Chris Brogden (wonder how he's doing
these days?). They seem to work nicely for a couple
of months then gradually peter out.
I do like what you're suggesting, however. Nothing
formal, just each of us commenting on a photo a day.
Even if one decides to pick an arbitrary number ("I'm
going to try to comment on 10 this month") and stick
with it -not necessarely favourites, maybe ones that
are "close but no cigar" that deserve a "you should
try this" approach - that would be a good thing. And,
that was a run-on sentence if I ever read one!
So, great idea, Bruce. I'm glad you brought it up.
We should try to bring PUG back to it's former glory!
BTW, I don't recall seeing anything posted on PUG by
Erin lately? She's so good, she should post more.
Lend her your *istD and let her go wild!! <vbg>
cheers,
frank
