No you're not dreaming.  I frequently do this, especially if I just want
some quickie prints.  A file is a file is a file, whether it's a .jpg or
plain text and your card reader with a flash card in it, as far as your
computer is concerned, is nothing more than another storage disk  Just go to
Windows Explorer and *copy* the pix from wherever they are on your hard
drive to the flash drive.
