Don, I've had the same experience than yours a few days ago. I had put pre-used alkaline cells and got into problems not long afterwards. I tested the voltage of the batteries and they were just over 1.4. I then remembered that Ni-Mh was working better (longer) and won't use alkalines again.

What I don't get is why the D works so well with Ni-Mh that are lower in voltage.

This is a section from my previous post on
'battery glitches' on the D:

"These D's seem to get real squirrely when the
batteries are nearing death!
The old cells were down to 1.42 volts, apparently
that's the magic number for 'squirrely-ness' on
my particular D! ;-)"

1.4 is getting pretty near the end of an Alkalines useful
life in a camera or a flash.
FWIW I had VERY bad luck with Alkalines and now use only
Lithium cells which seem to last a very long time without
problems. (In the D)

Reasonably good may be too low for the D. I am new to it, but I've
had problems with alkalines that were still at 1.4 volts. Have you
tried fresh batteries (or fully charged Ni-Mh) to see if the problem
 is still there?
