Shel,

Yesterday I stopped into a nearby Apple store to look at the Cinema
displays and to find out if they'd work on a PC. Oh, my, that 30" display
is A-mazing. While wiping the slobber from my chin I was also impressed
with how quiet the Mac was compared to the jet sounding high-end Intel
PC's. Mine has SEVEN fans, and sometimes it seems that a blimp would be a
great accessory. So, Mac users, is the Power Mac G5 the high end for the
machine? Talk to me about speed, memory, number, size and speed of hard
drives it can support, what processors can it use, and so forth. The sales
person at the Apple store was not very helpful and told me to check on
line. However, I'd like some first hand comments about these machines.

yes G5 is the high end machine, but perhaps you don't even need a high-end machine as such. Take look at Mac mini, it's probably the quietest computer possible (you can hear only hard disk spinning and only if you are watchful) and IMHO it does have plenty of power for image processing. Let the processor speed alone doesn't fool you - in fact I've created some A0 posters (32x40inch) on PowerMac 8500 (about 250MHz CPU) quite long time ago. I think Mac mini + high quality display (Cinema or perhaps Nanao/Eizo) is a better combo for the money than high-end computer + mediocre display.
