On 31/1/05, Shel Belinkoff, discombobulated, unleashed:

So I gather. Never seen one meself.

I think that depends. Add-on boards come with extra fans, making extra
noise. Most Macs come ready-equipped, so you more or less get what you
hear. IIRC they have a liquid cooling system for the CPU ? Dave Mann will
know more here.

>Mine has SEVEN fans, and sometimes it seems that a blimp would be a

Currently, yes.

>Talk to me about speed,

PowerMac G5s are amongst the fastest consumer machines available and will
be comparable to the fastest PC machines. As of June 2004, the G5 comes
in single and dual processor format, up to 2.5 Gigahertz

>memory,

RAM can be added on a BTO (Built To Order) Mac, up to the supported
maximum (IIRC 8 GB)

>number, size and speed of hard
>drives it can support,

A Mac is basically a PC - it uses industry-standard components. You can
swap out hard drives like you can on an Intel box. The current G5s come
with either 80 or 160GB drives, and can be ordered with up to 2 250GB
drives. When a 500GB drive becomes available, then you would be able to
remove an existing drive, and replace it. AFAIK, there is space for two
hard drives inside.

> what processors can it use

The G5 processor is made for Apple by IBM. There are third party
companies like Sonnet technologies who make processor upgrades for older
Macs, but this will not apply to the latest Apple machines for some time.
The latest Macs are the fastest available, upgrades are a non-sequitur at
the moment.

> However, I'd like some first hand comments about these machines.

I would love to give you a first-hand review but I'm on a G3 machine
which although showing its age, is still plenty fast for my needs.
