By the way they both report crashes as virtually nonexistent. This is true of my dual G4 as well. The latest operating system (10.3.7) is very bulletproof.

I've had.... two system crashes in the past 12 months, I think. And I believe that I was largely responsible for both of them (I was fiddling with settings at the time). The system has never died while I was doing real work.

I leave the Mac in "sleep" mode overnight so when I start up the machine it's ready for use before the picture even appears on the monitors. It only gets rebooted when a software update requires it.

I have heard that cheap & nasty RAM can cause problems, just as it can for PCs. I spent a few dollars extra buying RAM through the local Apple dealer - it wasn't much more than the generic stuff.

10.4 is due very soon. In recent years every new operating system has been a substantial improvement over the last. I expect this will again be a plus.

Be aware that Apple do charge for 10.x releases. It's not obvious from the numbering scheme but these are pretty major updates. I think they charge US$129 - this is the full price; there is no "upgrade" pricing. I don't think it's too bad considering the amount of improvements they make:

The next digit (eg going from 10.3.6 to 10.3.7) is free via Software Update. Patches and minor updates are released regularly and if you keep these up-to-date the next 10.3.x release would be a smaller download for you. 10.3.8 is on its way, even with 10.4 about to be released.

Cheers,
