As John said, you need some space for the swapfile (Pagefile.sys in XP). However. MS say that it is normally set to 1.5 times the amount of RAM that you have,and this seems to work well for me.
I'd only begin to worry when I had less than 10%, or 100MB, left nowadays.

If you're using Windoz you need a certain amount for the swap/paging file (or
whatever you like to call it) but it's better to put your swap file on a
different drive if poss. Depends on you configuration of course.
