I think the trouble may come from the fact that the Z1 initially had
rather poor sales, so the price dropped dramatically. People who bought
into this have come to think of Pentax as being a way to get far more
for your money than the other big 4 offer. The MZ5N continued this by
offering almost the same functionality as the MZ-3 at a price that
belied its ability.

People now want the same underpricing on the MZ-S. Pentax wants to come
back to the 'market price' and charge similarly to the other
manufacturers. Whether they have a 'better' product or not is not the
issue when these people are comparing prices.

Personally I would like MZ-5N with updated AF. I would not normally
dream of spending 1000 on a body, but got into the idea of buying a
flagship which had absolutely everything I could ever want and would
last forever. Unfortunately the MZ-S is not quite this, so I am unsure
whether I can warrant stretching my budget that much. This is not to
say the MZ-S is not value for money, just that I dont know if I can
justify spending that much for it when I could get a 5N for a fifth of
the price. Sure the MZ-S is a lot better but it still has limitations,
just like the 5N. If I lived in America and could get it for 850 then
I would probably jump at it, but I dont.

The difficulty is not that the MZ-S is expensive, but that some of the
recent 35mm bodies were/are so cheap. The lenses and medium format may
have been competitive on price, but the 35mm bodies have been real
bargains of late.

I've noticed this weird fact too. I've never considered my Pentax
equipment as cheap; LX, 645n + the lenses. Its like Rebel owners
starting complaining about the Price of an EOS-1v and L-lenses.
