According to my "Encyclopedia of Graphic File Formats" (Murray and van
Ryper, 1996) it did.

    "The JPEG standard does offer a separate lossless mode.
    This mode has nothing in common with the regular DCT-
    [Discrete Cosine Transform] based algorithms, and it is
    currently implemented only in a few commercial

Maybe, but I doubt it.  For all practical purposes today, the two are
synonymous to the people that don't know about the difference, and the
context informs the people who do know the difference.
