The consumer grade Sigmas used to be pretty poor and are now fairly good (I
have
an old 18-35 zoom that's disconcertingly lightweight and flimsy and a very
recent 28-138 that seems as well made as any other consumer zoom available).
The
EX series are very well made (I have the EX 300/2.8 and it's built like the
proverbial tank).>>>>>>>
I have to agree with Mark about the part that Sigma's used to be pretty
poor. I would call them a good model boat anchor, My first zoom was a
Sigma 100-200, purchased in the early 80's, when I didn't know any better.
I shot several rolls of film using it and and never got one image that was
up to my standards. Well, that lens ended up in a drawer some place in the
house. I haven't even missed it. It also soured me on zooms, so I have
used nothing but prime lenses since, at least until I bought my ZX-5 with
the 35-80 zoom in 1995. I like that zoom quite a bit. Maybe, I'll look at
some more.
