It lacks some features, but most of them are not so important to me.
Maybe 16-bit colors and more advanced cropping/resizing, etc.
But otherwise. for my unix environment it is perfect.
I can find some windows box with Corel/Photoshop when i really need.

Same here. If you want those two features, a fork of the Gimp
called "Cinepaint" does do deep color and color management. It's based
on an old (GTK 1.x) version of the gimp and is lacking lots of the
whizbang bells and whistles. It will, however, provide the basic image
manipulation tools and preserve deep color.
