The battery indicator on the D is pretty hopeless. Full, half, dead. As
soon as it goes off full, I replace the batteries. Sounds as though the
DS is the same.

Here's a question for *ist DS veterans:
I just noticed that my DS's battery life indicator (on the top LCD panel)
went straight to "half full" from "full" (I think - I didn't notice
seeing
anything in between). I shortly changed from one set of NiMH AA's to
another, so I don't know what the next indication would be ("empty"?).
I took a look at the DS manual, but I didn't find a mention of what the
"steps" might be in the battery life display. So, my question is whether
that's the granularity of the battery life display or not.
If "full", "half full", and "empty" are the only indications for battery
life (and I'm ~HOPING~ that I just overlooked, say, perhaps a "3/4 full"
indication), it would seem that the information is not as helpful as it
could be.
Hmmm... This is probably my first post to the PDML where, instead of
being
surprised to be wrong, I am actually ~hoping~ that I am wrong... (<g>)
