Hmmm, how about a focal plane leaf shutter.  Is that possible?

True, also, if you used a polarizing filter, you'd get strange results
on the film

Yeah?  I don't find it too awkward to hold my 6x7 vertical, but as the
image ratio is almost square, I rarely do it.
