I can't help, as I don't know the difference between them or there
archivability.

But, reading this just made me think, they can't release Blu-ray
technology soon enough. That 40Gb would fit on 2 single layer disks,
or 1 dual layer.

One of the biggest promoters of + is HP, which is why that format is still
around. There are lots of HP Pavilions and HP DVD writers around. I am pretty
sure another big company, I think it is Dell, but maybe not, can't remember, is
also a supporter of +. So it is unlikely to fade away.

OTOH, - used to be cheaper. Right now with the 16x DVDs the pricing seems the
same for + and -. I have an HP so I use +. HP DVD writers will only write +.
As far as DVD players go, most play both with no problems.

I use Memorex because I find it a reliable brand. But I use DVDs for other
things as well.

Some like to get DVDs that are fancier and more expensive for pictures. I
forget the brand. Probably someone will pop up and mention it. I vaguely
remember
it being discussed on this list before. Something about dye jobs. I have
never understood that type of discussion. ;-)

More than you wanted to know about DVDs. This is mainly a movie oriented
site. But it does discuss which DVD writers work with which brands of DVDs. And
which brands of DVDs work with which DVD players. And which DVDs are reliable.
It's a place to look if you are concerned.

Personally, I don't think it matters much. If you find a brand you think is
reliable, use it. You can tell by how many are duds in a 50 DVD pack. An
unreliable brand will have a lot of duds, a reliable one will have none or few.
Duds
are ones that resist formatting and/or copying to no matter what you do. My
dud rate with Memorex has been very low. But some brands seem more reliable
with some writers, too.

One thing is, 8X has disappeared from the shelves of my local CompUSA. While
you can still find them on the Net, they are disappearing from local retail.
So I have bought another drive to do 16xes. 4xes are pretty much unobtainable
now except for RW (read/write). And you can mainly find those on the Net. DL
(dual layer) seems cool, but most DVD writers still write DL slow. And the
discs
are expensive. So I don't think it's worth it. At least for now.

For pictures, RW is not a bad idea. Though with archiving, +/-
(non-read/write, just read) is okay. But I'd burn at least two discs of any
copy setup you
do. Discs can go bad just sitting around. While it isn't common, it does happen.
