Isnt it already on the the desktop's HDD to begin with?
If its not then its not really a backup, it's the original
unless you call going from the camera flash memory the
to any HDD making a "backup", most would call that a transfer.
Seems like the terminology being used here is vague which
is confusing the issue, at least for me it is....

Some people don't look at this as an all or nothing thing.
I archive stuff to CD/DVD, then back it up onto a hard drive for ease of 
access.
