If you want a Pentax, the *ist D is a good choise - it has alledgedly a
better user interface (less menu's, more real buttons for i.e. WB adnd other
things ) than the later models. The DS has larger buffer (faster write
speed - 16 secs to write a 5 shot RAW burst - the D uses 37 secs). The *ist
D is an "old" camera - not so fast AF, not so fast FPS, not so fast write
speed - but it's well built and handles more like a pro camera.

If I had to start fra scratch, I'd probably go for a Canon 20D and some
L-lenses - but I can't get that for 500 USD. And I have a shelf full of good
Pentax lenses, so I'm still with Pentax - have been for 25 years.

In short: Unless you have a lot of money - go for it!

BTW - you don't know what work flow is till you have a digital camera!

Jens

Emne: Question: Should I buy an ist D?

Folks,

I've been on the "digital fence" for some time, and
had pretty much decided to buy the ist D successor
when it becomes available.

I'm getting itchy, though, since it doesn't look as
though the new body will be here by summer.

In May and June, a niece is getting married, I'm going
to GFM, my son is graduating from high school, and my
wife and I will be traveling in Europe. That's 50
rolls of Ektachrome right there, i.e. $500 with
processing.

I'm really not sure how I will feel about the "digital
workflow." It is possible that I will run screaming
back to film. I really like my slides.

Soooo... I can probably pick up a used ist D for
$700-800, looking at the recent prices on eBay and
KEH.

Worth it?

Rick
