A lot of people shifted both before AND after the launch of the *ist D. I
didn't regret buying mine then or now - it does what I wanted it too and
still does - and all the negative things I thought about it (reliability,
battery munching) all have been proved to be without foundation.
If I was starting from scratch again, I'd buy a Pentax.

I don't regret having owned a D, it simply proved to be the wrong choice
for my needs, mainly due to gear compatibility issues, but also due to
write speeds.
Frankly, at the cost of a DS, I'm tempted to grab one as a second camera
(I've still got Pentax gear, and still shoot with it, even if my main
body is a Canon).
