It certainly can be done. By planning each shot carefully (tell them, no
surprises, please), using manual focus, waiting for the right moment.
Any camera with a shutter speed of 1/1000sec can do that.
But AF has to be fast to be of any use other besides convenience. The *ist D
Auto Focus is a convenience. When it comes to capturing the moment, you
better turn it off.

You should say yes.
I shot several softball games for my church with my *istD this past summer &
had absolutely no issues with it at all and got numerous great action shots
that were well accepted by the team & the church.
