It certainly can be done. By planning each shot carefully (tell them, no surprises, please), using manual focus, waiting for the right moment. Any camera with a shutter speed of 1/1000sec can do that. But AF has to be fast to be of any use other besides convenience. The *ist D Auto Focus is a convenience.
