Kevin
Well, it's 2 years since the *ist D was announced by Pentax.
2 years is a lot when it comes to electronic technology - in fact it's a
generation.
I recall looking for a 1GB CF-card for the D. I found two adds on the
internet - one for 1000 USD and one for 750 USD.
Times have changed since then, Kevin.
This may be a reason for the rather small buffer in the D, measured by
today's standards.

The AF was slow from the beginning - most reviews was complaining about this
from the very start - it was slow then compared to the competitors (6MP
2000 USD DSLRs) I paid a little less (1600 USD from Germany, body only) in
2004. Today I can get a faster 8MP camera priced @ 30% of this. So, in
regard to AF I believe the D have been behind from day one. It still is.
Just ask any Canon or Nikon user - or just read the reviews - at dpreview
for instance. In 2001 Canon had a DSLR featuring 45 focus points and 8 FPS!

So, Kevin, as far as Pentax goes, not much have changed. You are right about
that.
Perhaps the size, viewfinders and the price tag has changed. But the later
models have less features. Made for people that don't vare about speed.
Canon have offered 8 DSLR's above 8MP by now! Pentax - none!

If the D was behind the competition in 2004 - it's further behind today,
isn't it?
It thrives on smallness, build quality, and backwards compatibility
concerning lenses
It's still a lovely camera, though. (So is the MZ-S, the PZ-1p, The Super A
and the LX and the ESII).
The *ist D is probably the best I can get right now - for my Pentax lenses,
that is.
But if I was starting from scratch, I'm quite certain I'd go elsewhere.
A lot of photographers do, you know.
