Doesn't this depend somewhat on whether the kid wants to learn
photography or just take pictures? Personally, I find that I
don't pay as much attention to exposure when I use an automatic
camera, and I don't pay as much attention when I use a build in
meter as when I use a hand held incident meter.
Of course if one does not give a damn about the technicalities
of photography one is better off with an auto everything camera.
And, that consists of about 99% of the camera market. While I
would guess that 50% of the people on this list do give a damn
about the technicalities. That is undoubtedly why so many of us
recommend manual cameras.
