Some are National Trust, some are English Heritage (in England, don't know about the other countries). They have different attitudes and policies towards The Great Unwashed, which are sometimes in conflict. If I remember correctly, the NT, who look after the National Parks, is all in favour of people clambering around everywhere provided we don't actually destroy everything. English Heritage would rather the only people allowed near their stuff were the aristocracy and the panjandrums of the fine arts world. Bob
