Not sure if this is your problem, but what you described sounds
similar to what I saw.
I have had problems with a Netgear wireless router with a couple
different computers.  Apparently the computer looses connection with
the router when it tries to find a power savings mode.    For my
machines it did not matter if I was using the computers or not.  It
seems that after the computers connected to the router the driver for
the wireless adaptor tries to save power.

Try setting your desktop's wireless adaptor to no power savings and
see if this helps.  You might find this setting via:

Open Network Connections
Right click the Wireless Network Connection to bring up its properties
Click on the "Configure button" next to the adaptor name
Scroll down to "Power Management"
Set it to "High Performance"
(at least this works for my adaptor)
