Sandra,
An evening event would certainly require a stable camera rest. I
include a "bean bag" (probably filled with plastic pellets, for that
matter) in the car when photo gear is loaded and have put it to very
good use.
A small table top pod can serve IF the surroundings are accommodating.
Anti shake camera features would, of course, help to a degree.
The ISO adjustment capability built in to digital SLR's is a great
help.
