First, just because John [C] has yet to > see a wide-angle shot taken with a 'FF' sensor that doesn't have soft or > dark edges and corners, does that mean that *all* wide-angle shots > taken with a 'FF' sensor has soft or dark edges and corners ?? Because I > have seen wide-angle shots taken with a 'FF' sensor that certainly are > not soft or dark on the edges and corners. So who is right? Hence the > statement is meaningless.
Okay, how many 35mm-size sensors are commonly available on the market? Not many. Canon's 1Ds, 1Ds mII, and 5D are the three that spring to mind. Kodak's old bodies aside, these are the FF cameras people use. Now, I work in a high-end camera and printing shop. I do not claim to know everything, but I have seen an awful lot of photographs from an awful lot of cameras, and when people want large prints from these cameras, I'm the one who makes them 90% of the time. When a customer (or my coworker who sold his Leica gear for the 5D) brings me a digital image to print, I can see what camera it was shot with by looking at the file's properties in Photoshop. If I get a file from a FF Canon, and if the image was shot with a wide-angle lens (including their wide L lenses), the majority of the time the image has soft corners and/or edges. This is my own experience with these images. I don't have scientific data to back myself up with, but damnit, I know what I'm talking about here. This is what I do for a living. Hell, even Canon's own wide-angle sample photo from the 5D, when the camera was just being released, had soft corners! Shouldn't that say SOMETHING to you? > Has the omnipresent Mr C actually compared all possible combinations of > 'FF' sensors and wide-angle lenses, at different apertures and different > ISO settings etc etc ? Do you realise how many combinations that is? And > if he has, under what circumstances? > > The sentence is as meaningless as: > > 'Christ the Lord has risen' Oh fuck off, Cotty. Everyone knows Jesus hates FF cameras. John Celio P.S.: I'm not omnipresent, omnicient, or omnipotent. I'm just experienced and consider myself well-informed. -- http://www.neovenator.com AIM: Neopifex "Hey, I'm an artist.
