I prefer the first. It's lighter and the frame round each photo is less distracting. On the other hand, I don't like the frame around the page at all - it serves no purpose.
The text on the single pages of style 1 falls below the line, even on my hi-res screen, and I think the font is unnecessarily large. On style 2 the dark grey is too heavy for the pictures. I feel also that there's a slightly jarring discontinuity between the main elements of picture and text which are on the drop shadowed backgrounds - which is quite nicely done - and the page title (A Photo ... by John F...), which is on a plain background. Consistency would improve that, in my opinion. In general I prefer no frame, or something subtle about 1 pixel wide. No problems in my browser, which is IE7 on XP SP2. I like the BMWs!
