It may not be that unusual.
The 1.4L and 2xL converters are 'matched' converters for this 
specific lens (and a few others like the 400 2.8 and 600 f/5.6 or f/4)
and the 1.7x AF is know to be fairly good as well.

The 300 2.8 with 1.4x could be seen as a 400 f/4 (or 420mm actually)

With the 2xL converter it is the poor mans 600mm lens with f/5.6 :-)
