I understand the point you're making Mark. I just don't understand how
you've acquired the data to support the conclusion you're reaching with
regard to who make up the majority of the dpreview audience.

Whenever a friend or acquaintance (mostly total novices) asks me what
digital camera they should buy, I send them straight to dpreview or Steve's
Digicams, with the advice that it can tell them far more than myself about
all the different camera models out there. They are universally overwhelmed
with the amount of information. In addition, I don't interject my personal
opinion on their purchasing decision, which gives them total freedom of
choice, and me total lack of responsibility. :-)

I also understand that not using the same lens is a variable, yet I find
dpreview's use of the the faster standard view 50mm lens of each camera
brand to be a classic way of testing. Though now, more than likely, the
average buyer will have a cheap camera-brand-name zoom, instead of a 50mm
prime.

We can probably argue this back and forth either way. Not using the same
lens intoduces a variable and can skew the results. Showing test results
with a lens I'm unlikely to purchase arguably invalidates the results as
well.

Like buying a PC nowadays, a large % what were comparing is unnoticed or
unnoticeable a large % of the time.
