In my opinion, Sony, Nikon and Pentax are the three go-to brands right now, short of the full-on pro bodies. Sony for bang/buck (A200) or best ergonomics( A700), Nikon for cheapest (D40), best sub-$1K (D80) and highest performance (D300), Pentax for best compact kit and best foul weather kit (K20D with DA Limiteds or DA*'s respectively).
