With a PC, all you need to do is install the drive, restart the machine, go to the disk management section of the computer management, and initialize the drive. The computer assigns a drive letter, does a format and your good to go. You should be able to leave the jumper on cable select, since it isn't going onto the same plug as the C drive Windows machines need to format new drives before they can be used I would expect that it would be similar on a MAC, though it might be easier as well.
