The Mac OS X utility program, Disk Utility, will by default do the correct thing for 99% of configuration cases (format than setup the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) file system volume with a single partition, Apple_HFS partition type on an Apple_partition_scheme) and mount it in accordance with the UNIX disk identifier and mount point schema. In other words, there's nothing much to do other than fit the drive, start the system, and let Disk Utility do its job.
