There was Jimmy's on 67th Street and the Palm Tavern on 47th near
South Park (now King Drive), but those were blues clubs. Muddy Waters

wow lucky you -- neither of those names rings a bell....
I hung out at the College of Complexes on State street in the near north
-- where Bill Broonzy
performed and I was lucky to know him... I had no idea at the time how
big a name he was in
the blues world... folks performed there as well... as did I (not
singing - that would have been awful!) what a great place it was... the
bug house orators came there too... and it is where
I learned Scrabble. We played Charades for money... and I sometimes
co-hosted audience
quizzes. where the prizes were in bar tokens.
get so nostalgic around this time of year.

ack - my memory ----
Of course I went to the Green Mill --- but my first response was
about anotehr jazz club on the south side...
At the moment I can't remember who I heard or how often I went there
but I was definitely
flying with a crown in my youth that did... makes me want to get out
the dairy I kept in
the 50's I went to a lot of places when I was 16 to 17 years old
with older friends - I
looked older and no one ever asked me for ID.
