Power consumption and heat generation are not significant concerns
with the current systems unless you intend to overclock the CPU or
rack the systems with a bunch of others (Cooling is often at a premium
in Datacentres). For a desktop system indended for image processing
buy as much CPU power and RAM as you can afford and a big PSU (So
you've got plenty of power for extra drives). I'd recommend whatever
Quad-core processor has the first big pricing gap above it (The
top-end processors have a premium attached, if you look for the
premium in the pricing and buy just below where it kciks in, you'll
usually have the best bang for the buck).
