Once past a certain point for a given application, more RAM does not improve performance. Once you're past 3G of installed RAM, what makes the biggest difference in Lightroom performance for either WinXP and Mac OS X is faster disk io and more free space on the disk. Even 64bit doesn't make as big a difference.

The same goes for dual- vs quad-core cpus. Yes, LR takes advantage of distributing processing threads, but there are limits to how much gain can be had from doing that.
