The thing to remember about cables, given cables that work in each case, and massively simplified:
* for analog signaling, the cable quality can make a big difference, even when both cables get (some of) the signal across the void;
* for digital signaling, as long as the signal gets through, it gets through. As long as the signal gets through, you get full quality (that's the simplified part).
So, in general, you don't need expensive cables for digital signal paths; it's just not necessary.
Example: Compare the cost of a high end HDMI cable to the cost of CAT6 network cabling for gigabit speed Ethernet. Yes, the HDMI cable has more wires in it, but there's typically /no/ need for US$ 50+ HDMI cables, unless you simply have more money than you know what to do with.
