Yes as far as I'm concerned (qualified as an EE), if it carries the HDMI logo then it's all good.

The trouble is, the "cheap" HDMI cables are in the order of NZ$50 for 1 metre. Part of that is probably the patent licensing for that very same HDMI badge, but the rest is the insane retail margins and a general lack of competition. A colleague of mine used to work at a large electronics retailer. He has some stories :)

We get ripped off for RCA cables as well, but I have the option of making those myself.
