The HDTV hardware is cheap, the service is what's costly. I spent only $2500 on my hdtv hardware stuff 5 years ago, but in the same 5 years I spent over $6000 on my CATV/SAT bills and those will continue on forever....
for contrast i have two used TVs (total $30), two thrift store video switching receivers (total $40), an excellent set of mains, surround & center all purchased separately at thrift store ($60), another pair of speakers bought 15 years ago for $200; two TiVos (one an HD TiVo costing $100 as reward 9 years of service, the other found for $100 on craigslist and has free lifetime service); DTV converter box ($12 after coupon)
ongoing costs: $96/year for TiVo service (discount rate when adding a second unit to the free lifetime unit); no cable service -- had it for a few months in year 2000 didn't find it worth it
the biggest hidden costs are electricity and late fees to the excellent local library where we get much of our watching material
