Ok, I'll try to duplicate your basic test with my flash and DA* 16-50
and see what I get.

So if I understand, I should set the camera to manual exposure and
set the flash to manual zoom.  Probably shoot at a neutral target
that looks just the same no matter what the zoom on camera and flash
are - like a big, blank wall.  Then shoot at each zoom range of the
flash.  I assume that the lens should be at the same focal length as
set on the flash zoom.

Does this sound about right for the test?
