I've been buying from B&H for years. They're great. Outstanding
service and good return policy. Of course they carry everything Pentax
produces. The days of the local camera store are disappearing. It
won't be long before your local Nikon dealer bites the dust as well.
They just can't compete with high-volume sources.
Stores like Walmart and Sam's Club, the names of which you cleverly
disguise in your post, aren't in the business of high-end merchandise.
They carry a few fast-moving cameras for the soccer mom and t-ball dad
set. It would be foolish of them to deal with low-volume advanced
equipment.
I too have dealt with B&H and Adorama for years. The drawback for me is
not B&H service or return policies. The drawback is UPS leaving
expensive, valuable items out on the front steps where they can walk
away unobserved.
I like buying from my local, independent stores, where I can put my
hands on the equipment before I slap my credit card down on the counter.
And the local, independent dealers I've been dealing with ARE
successfully competing with the big inter-net dealers. Their prices are
competitive and there's the added benefit of being able to talk to other
photographers while I'm in the store. It's like attending a free
mini-university of photography while I'm shopping.
They're selling plenty of Canon & Nikon, even Sony & Olympus ... they
could and would sell Pentax if they could just get Pentax to fill their
orders.
The names aren't cleverly disguised. Wally World has been a common
sobriquet for Walmart ever since National Lampoon's Vacation movie. I
use it for derision.
But, I agree they're not likely to sell the K-7, yet that's who Pentax
tells me is the "local dealer" for the K-7.
