I'm not looking for lacquer for preserving the prints. I just want to seal the print and make it less susceptible to marks, rubs and scratches.
and , um, hence preserving it?
If it adds a slight gloss, all the better.
and you don't want to mat it because???

You could slip it into a clear archival sleeve of some sort .

My concern is regarding chemical reactions between the coating and the ink... which might ultimately destroy the work or possibly even make some nasty fumes for you to breathe.
anyway, good luck what ever you decided to do

Subject: Re: Lacquer for prints?

The Epson premium papers when printed with pigment inks are said to be archival and should last for a century of more. I doubt that any finish will last as long as the ink and paper will on their own. As Ann suggests, matting and framing is probably the best protection.

I would like to put some kind of protective finish on a couple recent prints
I've made on Epson's Ultra Smooth Fine Art Paper. Does anyone have a recommendation for a lacquer of some kind? I've tried a matte Krylon for artwork but it sprays unevenly, good finish, but impossible to apply correctly.

that sounds like a bad idea... how about a mat and glass? I mean, wouldn't
all those things make for bad chemical reactions???
