I bought one varifocal lens 35-85mm vivitar if I recall, and absolutely
hated
the ergonomics of that one. Never again, sold it
immediately. I don't care if the optics are better,
the handling matters too.

Vivitar S1 70-210mm f 2.8~4.0 (Version 3). The S1 35-70mm f2.8 varifocus

is also very good, though a K lens and not as convenient (handling 
refocusing and stop down metering can sometimes become hectic).
