Thanks. I think when  the camera is on extended center pole a lot of the 
purpose of the tripod is  gone, and it's not as stable. But until recently I 
hadn't thought about it much  (think I started thinking about it more at 
Yosemite when I was looking at  others' tripods), so you've confirmed my 
feeling.
