The only real damning aspect was how
quickly they discontinued FD production, by 1991 it was essentially
done, with no production by Canon, only rebranded Cosina stuff.
I understand the problems they faced. I was selling the stuff at the time.
But, completely abandoning the userbase was pretty shitty.
Personally, I think they should have continued at the very least, the T-90
(an EOS but for the mount) the same way Minolta supported the MD mount (the
camera technology dead ended, but they continued to make bodies at least).
As an aside, a friend of mine, a long time Canon FD shooter sent his T90 to
Canon some 10 years ago to fix the hot shoe.
They literally sent back a basket case, told him the camera was not
repairable and that he should buy whatever the latest EOS was at the time..
He's now using a D300.
He's done with Canon.
As an aside to the aside, when my A50/1.2 decided to arbitraritly convert
itself to an M series lens by popping a contact, Pentax tried to sell me a
43/1.9 to replace it.
I told them to piss off and fix my lens.
They told me parts were no longer available.
I told them the thing was still listed as new on their website.
They told me that there had been internal changes to the lens, and my lens
was no longer repairable.
I told them that their problems were not my problem, but that since the lens
was still listed, they could bloody well fix it.
Internal changes were their problem not mine.
They fixed it, but I had to be pretty scrappy with them.
