You've certainly had some poor experiences. I can't say if quality control is better or worse than other manufacturers but my *istDS and K200D have both been trouble free although I don't work them as hard as others might (the *istDS has just over 9000 exposures and the K200 just over 7000). My son's K20D has taken well over 20,000 exposures without problems.
