Poor mains power quality and price-driven electronics do not a good combination make. On the TiVo forums there appears to be a pretty strong correlation between UPS use and problems (or, pedantically, the lack thereof) with hard drives dying after a couple of years of 24/7 operation. I have UPS boxes on my TiVo for two reasons - one simply because PG&E aren't the best of suppliers, even before the A/C kicks in, and one because our cats sometimes wobble the power cables enough to cause the occasional dropout. I must admit, though, that it's nice to be able to continue to record for an hour or so when the neighbourhood loses power. It's also nice that my wireless network doesn't go away (it's on a UPS, too), and as my main computer nowadays is a notebook I can continue to work for an hour or so. THat's been very handy when the contractor shuts of power to tie in the new circuits for the kitchen remodel. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
