Paul,
Yes, I think so. More to the point, it offers more control more easily. With
infinitely variable contrast BETWEEN whole or half grades it's very easy to
tweak contrast exactly.

Yes. Any way to put the filters before the lens is preferable, unless it
subjects the gels to too much heat. A "cold" light gets to around 100
degrees F which is usually no problem.

It would bug me too. I'm not saying you'd find it easy to notice a big
difference--or any visible difference--but just on the face of it it does
seem evident that it's not the best solution.
