I hear you, Paul and know your position on the matter. I should however point out that after 30 years of prime shooting you're likely very confident about your choices of focal lengths of your zoom lenses (a.k.a. you know your tools). If, however, you take a starting photographer and give them zoom lens, they're likely to be slowed down in their development as a photographer, thanks to the uber-zoom lenses and common human laziness...

It is like in "I took a picture of my daughter across the back yard and the picture came out blurry, what is wrong with my camera?" To which the answer is that at 250 mm your uber zoom lens is dark and your hands are shaky. But nothing prevented you from walking few yards up to your daughter and shooting her at 50 mm or 100 mm focal length where your lens is less dark and even if your hands are shaky, your uber camera can help you out...
