It has happened a few times now -- I've been in front of someone elses computer where the owner has a wider view - don't know the numbers - but if you were sitting in front of one of these monitors, just looking at the wallpaper / desktop screen , the Google Chrome Icon
and the Firefox Icon that are normally circles appear as ovals...

And everywhere you go on line where there are images - unless they were created stretched, are distorted

These people have incorrect monitor resolutions settings.
In Windows XP, right-click on the desktop and select "properties".
Then click on the "Settings" tab and move the "Screen resolution"
slider and try out a few settings until you find one that looks good.
(In Windows 7 you right-click on the desktop and choose "Screen
resolution directly)

Easy enough - but if I get the owner to do it, will it still show his wide-screen HD DVD's full screen - while also viewing
my wed site as it was meant to be seen?

(I got groused at when I first tried to do just what you suggested to their machine)

I'm going to try to talk them into it if thats all it takes they do have xp
