I generally kill skin hotspots by using a very soft PhotoShop
paintbrush at about 25% opacity and 50% fill. I just pick up some
skin tone an paint it in carefully over the glare spot. Sometimes

That works well. Have you tried the patch tool instead of the clone
tool?
I've found if I bring the colour up and need texture, this works
with less fuss than cloning, since Photoshop will match the
densities quite well.
I tried the patch tool just the other day on some blemishes. It worked
well, and I expect I'll be using it again.
