My son-in-law is a photographer with stuff in Getty Images. He's also a photoshop expert (and Adobe PS beta tester) and has been converting a lot of his film lately with the Epson V500, which he feels is an excellent buy. He's a Windows computer - Canon Camera guy, but otherwise pretty stable. : ) I think Epson has a pretty good track record of working with OS X, but you might check to make sure that your OS version is compatible with the particular model you are buying.
For serious work, the Epson V700 & V750 have a wet scanning option (and 6400 dpi) that is supposed to provide superior results.
